Murac Trade Consortium

The Murac Trade Consortium is an oddity among interstellar governments: it possesses many of the characteristics of a human corporation, yet is nevertheless the sole governing body of the Murac race. With the combined capital and labour of an entire interplanetary species at its disposal, to call the MTC a major economic player in this quadrant of the galaxy is an outer-space-scaled exercise in understatement. Whether by inborn talent or near constant cultural and educational training, the Murac's great bartering and negotiating skills are legend. Additionally, their space is in one of the most resource abundant areas of known space, home to the great Murac Asteroid Field, a swath of space full of systems containing no stellar objects save heavily metallic asteroids, bearing a bonanza of useful ores. The resources of The Field, as it is often called, gives them a substantial industrial base for their behemoth trade enterprises. Their famous negotiating skills ensures a well paid place for any independent Murac in whatever diplomatic agency they chose. However, it is exceedingly rare for a Murac not to be indirect employ of the MTC, as most seem emotionally, even religiously dedicated to the common economic well-being of the Murac people. Even rarer are those Murac who turn to crime, but those who do have always become the wealthiest and most fearsome of pirate lords.

Another trait that the Murac are known for is their skill with engines.
They produce some of the most efficient, compact, and powerful engines in the galaxy, both sub-light and FTL, and their engineering skills in this area are highly sought
after. It is said among pirates that a stolen Murac drive is what separates the true corsair from a common raider.

As a military power their principal need has been for convoy escorts, to protect their shipping from the swarms of pirates drawn to the rich pickings of Murac trade lines. The Murac Asteroid Field which provides abundant resources for the Murac also gives ample cover for pirate fleets waiting in ambush. Because of this, Murac combat craft are generally fighters, bombers, corvettes, any gun-boats, engineered to quickly respond to the sudden appearance of a pirate raid. The military tradition of referring to the place where real combat takes place as "the field" is widely believed to the the origin of the same nickname for the Murac Asteroid Field.

The only actual warfare the Murac have ever engaged in was between them and the Vesudans. The dispute was generally over the north-west reaches of the Murac Asteroid Field, wherein the Vesudans had colonized one of the very few inhabitable systems to be found in The Field. As the only alien species known to the Murac at the time (as the Murac were to the Vesudans) the greater part of piracy in Murac space was committed by Vesudan exiles, occasionally led by one of the dreaded Murac pirate lords. Under these conditions, the Murac were disinclined to employ their fabled negotiating skills, and a brief border-war was waged. In the end, the Vesudans held on to a finger of territory in The Field, surrounded on three sides by MTC property.

Ever since the First Sejutan War, they have good relations to the Vesudan and Human peoples, and are the only species, so far as anyone knows, to have ever been granted a diplomatic presence in Mirranu space, a distinction that is often cited as conclusive proof that if a Murac can't close a deal, there's no deal to be made.
